The return is an English song by American Jewish singer Avraham Fried, released in 1981 as part of his debut album No Jew Will Be Left Behind. The song was composed by Chani Weinberg and written by Shmuel Goldman, and produced by Sheya Mendlowitz. The song is a ballad that tells the story of a father and son (a parable for the relationship between the Jews and Hashem) who reunite at the Western Wall in Jerusalem after the son had left his Jewish faith and heritage.

Lyrics

Standing at the Holy Wall
The gateway for our prayers
A fathers[Notes 1] prays for his son’s caress
To end his loneliness
His warm and loving eyes
Late night lullaby's[Notes 1]
But now he’s gone, forever it seems
To be with him his hopes his dreams

Chorus:
Open your heart,
Hashem awaits to enter
To be at your side
A single stride is all you need
His helping hand
Will take you ever higher
And leave you on the road
To your return

Approaching the Holy Wall
The gateway for our prayers
A son looks back at times he shared
His home oh to be there

He needs his fathers[Notes 1] guidance
His love to help him grow
He’s just not the same, he looks to the wall
And cries and calls his father’s name

(Chorus)

His vision blurred by tears
He stumbles to the ground
He's so broken, yet in his eyes
A gleam of hope does shine

Looking thru[Notes 1] the tears
His fathers[Notes 1] face appears
Reaching for his hand, together they stand
A father and son united again
